IRC TUTORIAL

Because AIM has been buggy lately, we're trying a new place to hang out--our own IRC channel. IRC can seem really scary to someone who's never tried it (the mod writing this knows from experience! D: ) but it's easier than AIM once you get in to chat.

There are two options for joining chat. The simplest way with the least features is using the Java applet:

1. Click here.
   
2. Enter your name (as listed below in the text box; if you would rather be called something else, please notify a mod!) in the "Enter your nick for the chat" box; enter "numeri" (no quotes) in the "enter which room to chat in" box.
   
3. You're in!
   

If you have Firefox, we recommend using Chatzilla, the second method. To chat using Chatzilla:

1. Click here.
   
2. Select "Add to Firefox", install just like any other add-on, and restart your Firefox.
   
3. Select Tools [in any existing browser window], then Chatzilla.
   
4. In the Chatzilla window, select Chatzilla, then Preferences.
   
5. Make sure Global Settings is selected in the left sidebar. Under the General tab, enter your name in the Nickname field.
   
6. In the Global tab, check the tick box labeled "Aggressive notify". If you would like to receive IM sounds, enter "beep" in all of the fields in the section labeled "Sound Events".
   
7. Under the Lists tab, scroll down to the section labeled "Stalk Words". Click the tick box labeled "Stalk whole worlds only", then click "Add" and enter all the Numeri member nicknames (in the list below).
   
8. In the Startup tab, under the section labeled Auto-connect URLs, push Add, and paste the following (no quotes): "irc://irc.dynastynet.net/numeri"
   
9. Click Apply, then OK.
   
10. Close the Chatzilla window, then launch it again via Tools -> Chatzilla.
    
11. You're in!

The Chatzilla method is obviously more complex, but it has several benefits. The Java applet does not flash the window when you receive an IM, but Chatzilla will if you follow the above steps, as well as play an IM sound if you so desire. Also, these steps are only necessary the first time you use Chatzilla. After that, joining chat whenever you want only requires going to Tools -> Chatzilla, and you'll be in!

IRC TRICKS & TIPS

• To change your nickname, type (no quotes) "/nick NEWNICKNAME"
  
• To post an action, type (no quotes) "/me ACTION"
  
• To change the topic, type (no quotes) "/topic NEWTOPICNAME"
